Killers Talk About Two New LPs, Duet With Lou ReedGroup isn't saying much about third studio LP, but bassist says quite a bit about forthcoming B-sides collection.
By James Montgomery

If the Killers have learned anything from their experiences with Sam's Town, it's that they're probably better off not talking to the press. "I think we're all learning to be more careful with what we say. Like [frontman] Brandon [Flowers'] Bruce Springsteen comments about the last record," bassist Mark Stoermer sighed. "People took that as if [Sam's] was some sort of Bruce tribute album. I mean, you can hear influences there, but to single out that one thing, that early on, it put a picture in a lot of people's minds. So we're playing it close to the vest now."

You can't really blame Stoermer for being tight, er, vested. After all, it's pretty fair to say that Flowers' media sessions in the lead-up to Sam's Town — including one spectacular interview with MTV News last May, in which he launched the whole Springsteen thing, talked about his artistic rebirth and asserted that Sam's was "one of the best albums in the past 20 years" (see "Killers' Next LP Will Show Strong Influence Of ... Bruce Springsteen!?") — did more harm than good, and most certainly led to some of the album's less-than-stellar reviews (see "Killers Try To 'Bring Back' Rock, But Not All Critics Are Onboard").

So this time around, the entire band is trying very hard to keep things secret. "We've got some new songs, but there's a long way to go before they're ready for an album," Stoermer said. "So far, they're different than Sam's Town, but nothing that we write surprises me. Some are a bit stripped down for us — whatever that means. Some have the vibe of [Jacques Lu Cont's] 'Thin White Duke remix' of 'Mr. Brightside.' We talk about what we want for the album, but inevitably, it always gets away from us."

Another reason they're being so elusive? Well, they've got another album to knock out before they even think about the follow-up to Sam's Town: a still-untitled B-sides album (tentatively due in November), which Stoermer said would tie up a lot of loose ends. "It's for the completists," he said, noting that the album would also feature two or three never-before-recorded songs written during the Sam's Town sessions. "That's the idea, at least," he said. "[Those kinds of albums aren't] the same in these days of file sharing, but for our fans to have it all together, remixed and retracked — well, we think that's cool. When we were growing up In the '90s, we were fans of [B-sides collections like] Oasis' The Masterplan, the [Smashing] Pumpkins' Pisces Iscariot, Nirvana's Incesticide. So we're trying to do something like that."

And though he's not talking much about those two or three new songs — remember the vow of silence — Stoermer did let it be know that one of them is a duet, which they're currently recording with none other than Lou Reed. "Yeah, Lou's here, recording it right now," he said. "It's a huge deal and an honor. We've never done a duet before, and Brandon had the idea to ask Lou if he would sing on it, since we felt his voice would go really well on it. And so we did, and he said 'yes.' It's pretty amazing, and the song is great too." So can we expect to hear more duets on album number three? "Heh, we're just talking about stuff like that now ... maybe deciding where we're going to record it," he laughed. "Other than that, we don't really have any plans. Maybe take a little break!"

Messege from Valentine's day 2007

Well it turns out that Lily's VISA issues are bigger than we thought, she was forced to cancel her US tour.

This is what she posted on her MySpace today:

20 ago 2007

hello all
v festival was great, thanks to everybody who came ,

i just want all my fans to know this ,I have called george bush a c**t at pretty much every show i have played over the past year , that is because I think he is one and i stand by that .
You can make up your own mind as to whether you agree with me or not , thats just how i feel . Just because i hate george bush doesnt mean I hate america , quite the opposite , I think the US is a great place and I am really sad that I cant be there for my commitments scheduled for the near future . what i said about George Bush this weekend bears no relation to what happened a couple of weeks ago with my visa , that is an issue with the US immigration service .

I just wanted to let you all know that my " foul mouthed tirade " so widely reported over the past couple of days is actually pretty rehearsed and ive beeen saying it long before all this visa issue . also me raising a drink to Amy , was just that , showing my support for her . I've been around enough substance abuse and alcoholism to know that it's a serious matter , and not to be taken lightly . im sorry, i wanted to write this because i felt like if i didn't say anything you all might believe the rubbish your being fed.

Make beats not war

Another one

I'm not all that bitter :P

I can also relate to this awesome lyric:

And in this crazy life, and through these crazy timesIt's you, it's you, you make me sing. You're every line, you're every word, you're everything. You're every song, that I sing along.Cause you're my everything.

In the end

I recently found out that Linkin Park's 'In the end' describes the situation i found myself in, a while ago.

I kept everything inside and even though I tried / it all fell apart
What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall to lose it all
But in the en, it doesn't even matter

In spite of the way you were mocking me, acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I’m surprised it got so far

For all this, there’s only one thing you should know:
I've put my trust in you, pushed as far as I can go for all this, there's only one thing you should know: i tried so hard and got so far, but in the end, it doesn't even matter.

Life after AI6

From the Blaker Girls myspace.

While their fellow "American Idol" finalists wait for word later this month on their futures, season six champ Jordin Sparks and runner-up Blake Lewis are hard at work on their debut albums.

Both singers tell Billboard.com they've been using off-days from this summer's American Idols Live! tour for recording, and both hope to have their efforts out before Thanksgiving. Sparks' is untitled so far, while Lewis' has dubbed his "Audio Daydream (ADD)."

"I'm feeling a little bit of pressure because it's coming up so fast," says Sparks. "But I have full confidence that we'll finish it by the time we have to."Sparks has recorded four songs so far -- including one with the production team Stargate -- recording in Los Angeles, Omaha, Neb., and Chicago, with a session scheduled for this week in Pittsburgh. She plans to do the bulk of the recording back in Los Angeles after the Idols Live! tour finishes on Sept. 22.

"It'd kind of Kelly Clarkson's pop edge, a little bit," she says, "and I recorded a ballad-y type song, like a power vocal song, and then I recorded just a really fun, fast one. I'm trying to mix everything together. I'm loving all the songs I'm recording, so hopefully that will come off the album when you listen to it and you'll be able to feel the emotion."

Idols Live! tour mate Chris Richardson has been writing songs with both Sparks and Lewis for their albums, which wukk be submitted for consideration. Lewis says he's recorded eight songs so far, working with producers such as Sam Hollander, Mike Elizondo and J.R. Rottem, with bt working on another track."It's your favorite '80s mix tape," Lewis says, "very inspired by Michael Jackson, Prince, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, the Cure. It's all over the map, really -- very influenced by '80s hip-hop, old school breaks, whatever.""They're letting me down the album I've always wanted to make," says Lewis, who's written 11 of his own songs for the set. Sparks and Lewis are both signed with Sony BMG by virtue of their "Idol" finishes, but the rest of the "Idol" crew is awaiting word on whether they'll receive an offer later this month. Richardson, meanwhile, is also planning a "rock and soul" album he says will be "a mixture of Maroon 5 and Jason Mraz." He's also writing for Phil Stacey who, like Haley Scarnato, plans to make a country album. Gina Glocksen hopes to record "something pop/rock, like ... Pink," while LaKisha Jones has her eye on a gospel/spiritual album.
